In the awards autumn series of blog posts, we get to know the brands and people behind the nominee products of the Nordic Natural Beauty Awards 2021. In this post, we are proud to share more about the Finnish natural colour cosmetics brand SAAGA Maaria, as told by the founder of the brand, Satu Yrjänen:

“When I was working as a nutritionist, I became very aware that there is a strong link between good skin condition, healthy food, and gastrointestinal balance. I learned that many familiar nutrients are essential ingredients also in skincare, and should be part of our cosmetic products. The same vitamins, antioxidants, and probiotics that are an important part of our well-being internally are that also externally.

One summer, I started making natural skincare products for my own use in my kitchen, though making colour cosmetics fascinated me as well. And so, the summer holiday project became complete with preparing mineral make-up foundations. Their smoothness, opacity, and natural glow really surprised me! The formulation was so perfect for my skin, so I wondered if there was someone else that would love to have this type of product as well..?

Thoughts lead to making and I started to build a beauty brand around the mineral foundations. As a nature lover, I definitely needed to consider environmental issues – such as ingredients and packaging. It was obvious from the beginning that I would use only natural ingredients in the products and I decided to use beautiful and durable bamboo packs for the foundations.

One question was still hanging in the air – how could packaging materials be reduced even more? The recycling of materials does not reduce emissions from the manufacturing process. Looking at the beautiful bamboo pack one day, I thought it would be quite a shame to throw it away when it gets empty. This is how the idea of ​​a refill pack came about.

Reenforcing my values further, all the products are vegan and cruelty-free, our production is heated by geothermal energy, and we use wind power.

SAAGA Maaria is a new brand and our goal is to expand our product range. Next, you can expect to start exploring blushes and bronzers.
