In the awards autumn series of blog posts, we get to know the brands behind the nominee products of the Nordic Natural Beauty Awards 2023. In this post, we are proud to share more about the Finnish natural cosmetics brand Ole Hyvä, as told by the brand:
“Let us honour the forest!
I once went to listen to a lecture on the traditional lifestyle of the Sami people. One fact in the lecture especially spoke to me: When a reindeer was taken for food it was utilized totally. The meat was eaten or dried. The hide was tanned into sisna and clothes were made out of it. The horns and bones were made into utensils and decorative objects, the veins into yarn. If the animal was to be killed nothing of it would be discarded. Life was respected.
We may remember how our Grandma darned socks and pullovers as well as took shoes to be repaired at the cobbler’s. In the Western lifestyle of the present day we’ve been taught that when an object is broken, it’s cheaper to buy a new one. Nature has become the victim of our un-sustainable lifestyle.
For example our forests are in demand in many directions. Trees are still needed for cellulose. Wood is also used as packing material, it is used to build houses and fibers are utilized to make fabric. At the same time we need forests as carbon sinks, for recreation and wildlife homes. This is a tough equation for us to resolve.
“Our Globe cannot cope with the present rate of consumption!” Fortunately this sentence no longer is an empty phrase. We are taking new action. In Finland there are many innovations and inventions we can use to help us put into practice the principles of circular economy and change old habits on personal and enterprise level.
We have also learned to make use of industry sidelines and byproducts. Even the much maligned forest industry is developing into an oasis of innovative inventions. Fortunately the present trend is that if wood is used, it is used efficiently. Spruce Sugar / Kuusisokeri TM is the result of the diligent developmental work by Monitura Oy and saw dust.
Spruce Sugar is a byproduct of the Finnish forest industry. What earlier was thrown away as waste is now a new natural raw material for cosmetics, like Ole Hyvä Metsä. Spruce Sugar is suited for use as a surfactant to break the surface tension of water. We at Ole Hyvä Luonnontuote have been waiting long for this product. We no longer have to rely on coconut based surfactants but can finally utilize tensides that have been developed from domestic gifts of Nature.
It was easy to accompany Monitura in developing a new line of products, Ole Hyvä Metsä, based on sugar tensides. The line includes a Hand Wash, a Shower Wash, a Shampoo and a Conditioner.
All products are packed in stylish plastic bottles made of recycled materials. By utilizing the forest with respect and in dignity we help it abide and grow. Then it can fulfill all the other missions it has: being a carbon sink, an oasis of recreation and above all a home for all beings.
