In the awards autumn series of blog posts, we get to know the brands as well as the people behind the nominee products of the Nordic Natural Beauty Awards 2022. In this post, we are proud to share more about the Swedish natural skincare brand Ljung of Lapland, as told by the founder of the brand, Erika Bjuhr:
“The organic and handmade skincare products of our Ljung of Lapland are produced in Sorsele, Lapland. We formulate the products with inspiration from nature’s healing plants and care for humans as well as the environment. We create all our products to provide nutrition, moisture, and protection to the skin, and use only pure and fresh water from the wild Vindel River as well as raw materials directly from nature. Our products are also enriched with bioactive herbs and plant extracts to achieve effects beyond the softening effect.
We are very accurate with the quality of the raw materials – the plant oils and fats we use are cold-pressed and organic. Active ingredients such as vitamins, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants are always added below 40 degrees Celcius, which means that they are not destroyed during manufacturing and thus have an even better effect on the skin.
Heather Flower Extract
A unique main ingredient in our products comes from heather flowers harvested at the Arctic Circle. Heather extract has unique properties that are particularly well suited to skin care for our cold and dry Nordic climate. It is really soothing for sensitive skin.
Heather flowers, rich in bioactive compounds such as ursolic acid, arbutin, and flavonoids, have traditionally been used in northern natural medicine for their anti-inflammatory potential. The results of modern research have confirmed the rationale for the traditional uses.
The active compounds in the Arctic heather extract have also shown an inhibitory effect on the elastase enzyme. The Arctic heather extract has also anti-aging properties.
Let me tell you then a little bit about where it all started. My great-grandmother lived during the latter part of the 19th century in Norrland. She had a great interest in nature’s herbs and medicinal plants and made tinctures that helped many sick people, and she also made soaps from birch bark for natural skin care.
My interest in nature’s healing plants also began early. All four of my children had severe eczema. By the time when my third child was born, also with severe eczema, we had tried everything possible without results.
We then decided to stop using skin creams containing harmful paraffin oils and other strong chemicals that destroy the skin’s ability to stay healthy. This quote from a famous artist from Sorsele inspired me a lot: “If you are looking for a helping hand, look down at your own shirt’s sleeves”.
And that was exactly what I did. I started making creams with ingredients from nature myself which I then applied to my children’s skin. After just a few weeks, we could see a clear improvement, and I knew I was on the right track.
After a course in Living Food, I gained more insight into the importance of preserving vitamins and enzymes by not heating the food. The same applies to the nutrients we add to the skin. What we apply to our skin is as important as what we eat.
I now manage my great-grandmother’s legacy through the knowledge of the healing power of plants, and together with my daughter Tina, we continue to develop the production of natural products with a focus on health and the future environment.
